Country Brief

The Kingdom of Swaziland is a sovereign state in Southern Africa surrounded, with the exception of Mozambique to its east, by South Africa and is one of the smallest countries in Africa. Swaziland is a developing country, with a small economy. It is classified as a lower-middle-income country and is a member of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU). It is also a member of the African Union (AU), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).It has also been a WTO member since 1995.

Swaziland’s economy is fairly diversified and its economy is very closely linked to South Africa, which accounts for about 85% of Swazi imports and about 60% of Swazi exports., while subsistence agriculture employs approximately 70% of the population. Real GDP growth since 2001 has averaged 2.8 percent, nearly 2 percentage points lower than growth in other SACU member countries, seen partly as a result of decreasing investment levels since the 1980’s.
