Country Brief

Togo is a least developed country in Western Africa, bordering Benin, Burkina Faso and Ghana. Togo’s economy depends on both commercial and subsistence agriculture, which provides employment for a significant share of the labor force. Cocoa, coffee, and cotton generate about 40% of export earnings with cotton being the most important cash crop for export. Togo’s trade policy is largely determined by regional agreements, namely with the Economic Community of West African States and WAEMU. Togo has been a member of the WTO since May 1995 and grants Most Favored Nation (MFN) treatment to all countries. Political instability is a major challenge in Togo related to the suppression of democratic demands.
