Trade for Sustainable Development Forum 2014

  • Trade for Sustainable Development

Making sense of sustainability initiatives in international supply chains

1-2 October 2014, Geneva, WTO headquarters

ITC is launching a charter to bring transparency and harmonization of standards among major buyers, certification bodies and policymakers.
Standards protect workers, the environment and consumers, while offering producers a door to access new markets. Public procurement increasingly reflects the influence of these private initiatives, blurring the line between public and private standards.

While standards address consumer concerns about environmental, labour and social issues, it is challenging for producers to comply with so many different, overlapping standards. Dialogue among policymakers, suppliers and buyers during this event aims to contribute to transparent, harmonized standards that contribute to sustainable development goals.

This is a two-day ITC event within the context of the WTO Public Forum:

    • From consumer conscience to sustainability standards: What role for policymakers?
      Wednesday, 1 October, 15:00-17:00, WTO, Room S2
    • Supplier and buyer perspectives; Linking supply and demand
; Towards core principles for sustainable trade

Thursday, 2 October, 9:15-17:15, World Meteorological Organization, Salle A
